SASANIAN KINGS. Hormizd II, 303-309. Drachm (Silver, 27 mm, 4.23 g, 3 h). Draped bust of Hormizd II to right, wearing winged crown with korymbos and falcon’s head; deteriorated legend to left and right, ‘mzdysn bgy ʾwhrmzdy MRKAn MRKA …’, i.e. ‘mazdēsn bay Ohrmazd šāhān šāh …’ (‘The Mazda-worshipping Lord, Hormizd, King of Kings …’ in Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar flanked by Hormizd II and an attendant wearing mural crown, both holding barsom bundle; deteriorated legend to left and right, ‘NWRA ZY ˗ ʾwhrmzdy’, i.e. ‘ādur ī Ohrmazd’ (‘Fire of Hormizd’ in Pahlavi). Göbl type I/1a. SNS II, type Ia/3a. Minor die breaks, otherwise, extremely fine.
